KOGB training areas

Practice areas, entry/exit corridors, and capacity limits for Southeast Aerial Systems at Orangeburg Municipal Airport — built to absorb Class 27-A traffic and expand to a second class without stacking aircraft over the same landmarks.

1Purpose

This plan assigns geographic practice areas around KOGB (Orangeburg Municipal) so SEAS dual and solo flights do not conflict with each other, with the city of Orangeburg, with nearby airports, or with military special-use airspace northeast toward Shaw AFB. It follows FAASTeam guidance on reducing midair collisions in VFR practice areas: named areas, entry/exit corridors, altitude blocks, and mandatory position reports.

Not a navigation chart. Verify every boundary on the current Charlotte sectional, Chart Supplement, and SUA/NOTAM status before flight. Bearings and distances are from KOGB (N33°27.42′ / W80°51.56′).

2Design logic

The airport sits 2 nm south of Orangeburg. Clean training air lies in the rural south–southwest–southeast arc. The north and northwest are closed to SEAS practice because of city noise, KXNO North AF Auxiliary (14 nm NW), and feeder flows toward McEntire JNGB and Columbia Class C. The northeast is constrained by Shaw AFB, R-6002 Poinsett, and the Gamecock MOA complex.

4Pattern — KOGB

Max concurrent SEAS aircraft in the pattern: 4. Traffic pattern altitude approximately 1,200 MSL (confirm Chart Supplement / local SOP). Left traffic runway 17/35; note runway 05 uses right traffic. Remain clear of the city on downwind/base when using northerly patterns — prefer south gates for arrival.

If the pattern is full, hold in the assigned practice area or delay takeoff. Do not orbit the field or extend endlessly on downwind.

5.1 Area Sierra (South) — PRIMARY

5.3 Area Southeast — PRIMARY

5.5 No-Go — North / Northwest

No SEAS practice between roughly 300°–030° from KOGB: Orangeburg city, KXNO, and flows toward McEntire / Columbia Class C.

6Corridors

  1. South gate: Depart active runway → climb runway heading to 2,000 MSL → after 3 nm turn south into Sierra.
  2. Southwest gate: Climb to 2,000 → turn SW · announce SEAS SW in/out on 122.75.
  3. Southeast gate: Climb to 2,000 → turn SE · remain clear of pattern conflict.
  4. Return (all): Enter the pattern from the south or southwest at TPA. CTAF calls at 10 nm and 5 nm. Never arrive from over the city as a standard SEAS procedure.
Corridors are high-density. Extra traffic scan. Do not converge every returning aircraft on one water tower or road intersection.

7Radio procedures

On 122.75 when entering or leaving a practice area, and every few minutes while maneuvering:

“SEAS [call sign], Area Sierra, 3,050, steep turns, remaining.”

State: aircraft ID · area name · altitude block · maneuver / intentions · remaining or exiting. Within 10 nm of KOGB, monitor and call on 122.70.

Expansion does not move boundaries. Split each primary area into low (2,500–3,000) and high (3,000–3,500) blocks and schedule by OSS so two flights never share one landmark at one altitude.

10Coordination

Share this map with other KOGB operators and independent CFIs. OSS posts daily area assignments on the flight-room board. Review midairs, near-midairs, and noise complaints monthly under the SMS. Contact airport manager (803-928-1545) before changing published corridors that affect noise or transient traffic.
